MoMa rocks Modern Masters

Again I'm straying off the golden track but one thing I was really excited about to going to Perth for (other than Gaga!) was this exhibition at the WA Art Gallery, 14 modern masters straight from New York - honestly not an opportunity to be missed! If you want to get a little more info you can visit MoMA's website, but these are some pics I took on my iPhone. I had my kids with me and Master 6 was maybe just a little too young to understand what we were seeing so I quickly rushed through and took pictures of all the things that spoke to me, I could've quite easily stayed and lingered for hours as it was really quite a powerful experience to see these beautiful works of art in the flesh. And it would seem that Master 6 is quite the mini photo-bomber!

This is Picasso's Night Fishing at Antibes, 1939, a massive oil on canvas which is absolutely stunning. It really opened my eyes to how intricate his work is, so many details and different things going on yet the overall picture is still cohesive, just gorgeous.

Henri Matisse's bronze busts and full body sculpture:

Fernand Leger (1881-1955) Big Julie 1945, oil on canvas - the colours are so vibrant and alive, beautiful piece.

Joan Miro (1893-1983), Portrait of a Man in a Late Nineteenth-Century Frame 1950, oil on canvas in a wooden frame:

Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) The Enigma of a Day (1914) oil on canvas:

Alexander Calder took my breath away with his installations. The second sculpture is Spider (1939) painted sheet aluminum, steel rod and steel wire, the first one is Snow Flurry, thank you unigami!. The artist also had necklaces, bracelets and other gorgeous jewellery that he had hand crafted - quite spectacular!

Wow, wow, wow is all I can say about Jackson Pollock! I must admit I was never an art guru to begin so I'm glad that I saw this exhibition and realised how much great stuff I've been completely ignorant to. The museum have a film clip which shows Pollock standing over a canvas (that is huge) laid out in the floor, with a fag hanging out of his mouth he dips a skinny plank of wood into the paint and weaves his magic. Behind him is a sea of long, dry grass and you see him flick the ciggie out behind him only to a have fresh one reappear clutched between his lips in the next frame, classic!

This piece is There Were Seven In Eight, 1945, oil on canvas. The more you look at it the more different it looks:

Free Form, 1946, oil on canvas:

Easter and the Totem, 1953, oil on canvas:

And now for something completely different, Louise Bourgeios an American born in France, 1911-2010. This photo doesn't capture it very well but these are ropes manipulated into intricate patterns. I first though 'er thats not art' but then realised I couldn't sit down and do that and I'm sure plenty of others couldn't either! This is called Crochet II, III and IV of Crochet I-V, 1997, three from a series of five mixografias.

This bright and vivid oil on canvas map of America, funnily enough called Map 1961, is by Jasper Johns born 1930. It really stood and was unlike anything else there and lead perfectly into the next inspirational artist......

.........Andy Warhol!! I still can't believe I was standing centimeters away from his work.

Campbell's Soup Cans, 1962, synthetic polymer paint on 32 canvases. To quote the blurb on the wall, "Like other Pop artists, Warhol used widely recognisable imagery in his work, such as comic strips, advertisements, photographs of celebrities, and tabloid news photos. In Campbell's Soup Cans, the number of canvases corresponds to the varieties of soups sold by the Campbell Soup Company in 1962. Warhol assigned a different flavour to each painting, referring to a product list supplied by Campbell's. The visual repetition recalls the artist's own history with the soup: "I used to have the same lunch every day for twenty years," he said "the same thing over and over again."

Below is the Heinz Tomato Ketchup Box (Prototype) 1963-1964 and Brillo Boxes (Soup Pads) 1964, synthetic polymer paint and silkscreen ink on wood:

Self-Portrait, 1966, silkscreen ink on synthetic polymer paint on nine canvases:

Before and After, 1961, casein and pencil on canvas:

At the end of the exhibition is a wall covered in cards with written comments from patrons:

I had to show you some of them as they are quite witty, and creative - Go Perth!

Boulder Markets at KBRC

Bit of something different at the Boulder Markets at the Boulder Cup which is all good for photos. The weather was beautiful with families everywhere and the parcel check to drop your stuff off and keep shopping unencumbered was a fantastic idea! Indigenous art (sold by Dixie Weatherall ) is so dynamic, I love the earthy colours: Dixie also sells this bush medicine, made from bush leaves, extra virgin olive oil and beeswax. It's said to relieve aches and pains and be good for ulce...

Variety WA - Golden Outback Bash

Done and dusted for another year, the Variety Bash funny cars have whipped through town, delighted local school children and disappeared again into a cloud of red dust in the name of raising funds for disadvantaged children and their families. If you heard all the sirens and horns blaring then you heard the posse of forty 25 year old vans, cars and 4WD's driven by wild and colourful characters who, in a special presentation at O'Connor Primary School, handed over a brand new 12-sea...

Support the Royal Flying Doctor Service!

This post is close my heart and I'm proud and excited to bring it to you. So often with not-for-profit organizations it's not until there is a misfortune in your family that you come to require their assistance and only then do you feel the need to give something back. I know I felt this way about Princess Margaret Hospital after baby girl had her operation when she was nine months old. It was lucky that we were in Perth at the time otherwise I'm sure we would've needed the as...

Tree planting day

Yesterday Kalgoorlie Boulder Urban Landcare Group hosted a tree planting day at the top end of Burt St, lots of families and volunteers from KCGM and Barrick showed up to turn some soil into a new home for native flora and hopefully fauna! This is the ground before the trees were planted, from what I understand the irrigation was made possible by the generous support of KCGM. I love geckos so I had to get a shot of this little dude on the side of KBULG's van: Busy, busy toiling ...
